Welcome to the MrFiveStar Web Site
Glen Iris Inn, Letchworth State Park, Western New York
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star

glensignw.jpgJuly 24, 2008 Western New York: Now here is a part of the country I haven't visited since I was a child. The only time I can remember being close was a visit to Corning NY to see the glass blowing at the Steuben factory back in the 50's. There is still a glass museum in Corning that is worth a visit if you are in the area. I don't know if you can visit the factory to actually see the art of glass blowing anymore, if so do it. I did visit the Waterford Glass factory in Waterford, Ireland and found glass blowing fascinating.

My visit to western New York brought me to Letchworth State Park and the Glen Iris Inn located in the park.. The park is located  60 miles from Buffalo, 48 miles from Rochester and 68 miles from Corning, NY.  Click here for a map to see where the park is located. Letchworth State Park, has some of the most magnificent scenery in the United States. It comprises 14,350 acres along the Genesee River. Within the park, the river roars over three major waterfalls, one of which is 107 feet high. The cliffs, created by the river’s path over thousands of years, approach 600 feet. Swimming pools, fishing areas, hiking trails, hot air ballooning, whitewater rafting and canoing are just some of the attractions at Letchworth.

The Glen Iris Inn has a total of 16 recently re-decorated, air-conditioned guest rooms. There are 12 (twelve) standard rooms and 4 (four) luxury suites. Standard rooms are decorated with appointments consistent with the charm of the Glen Iris while William Pryor Letchworth resided here. Rooms have either one double or two twin beds, full private bath, dressing table, and telephone service. glenbldgw.jpgThe four Luxury Suites have a bedroom area with a queen bed and dressing table. The spacious living area is furnished with period sofa and chairs. Each Suite has a full bath and telephone service. The Cherry Suite features patterned hardwood floors and modern bath with whirlpool tub. French doors lead out to the second floor private porch with a breathtaking view of the Middle Falls and the surrounding gorge.

This is not a B &B. Glen Iris is a true Inn with a restaurant serving 3 meals a day. The Inn is open from Good Friday till early November. Glen Iris has been in operation since 1914 so be forewarned, there are no tvs, radios, or Internet. You might as well turn off your cell phones as well, since neither my Verizon or AT&T phones had any signal. For us “connected” people it is a bit of a cultural shock to become “unconnected” even for a day or two but you will survive. In fact you will be surprised how relaxing it is to know no one will be calling and you don't have to answer any emails.

I suggest two overnights. This will give you plenty of time to hike, bike, ride horses, read, or just do nothing. Book the Cherry suite, the best. I stayed in the Beech Suite, that was OK. I could see and hear the falls from my suite window. There are some people that like the falls here better than Niagara Falls (the locals). I won't go that far, but I will say I am planning a return trip when the fall leaves change if the Cherry Suite is available. glen_cherry_b.jpg

Dining takes place in “Caroline's”, a large room with table cloth tables and numerous windows overlooking the flower gardens in the back of the property. The room was comfortable, and somewhat cozy considering its size. The food is average. I would give it a “C”. They do provide full bar service and an average wine list to go along with the type of restaurant. Don't ask for a drink on the porch if you aren't dining there. That is a No, No. Perhaps there is some law that dictates this, I would hope so and not another rule someone came up with. This didn't happen to me but I saw it happen to others, however you can order an appetizer on the porch with a drink and that is fine. Go figure!

Hear is the local skinny on the Glen Iris Inn. It seems that the property is owned by the New York State Park Service. They put the management of this Inn out for bid each year. The highest bidder gets it for one year. Then the process starts over the following year. The bottom line to this situation is that you are never sure what to expect from one year to the next. This year the Glen Iris Inn is managed by Rich Products a large International frozen food supplier. Rich also operates the Green Turtle Inn Restaurant in the Florida Keys. Somehow I expected a little more from a large company like Rich, but then again they probably but some bean counter in charge.

glenfalls2.jpgYou won't find a better place to stay than Glen Iris considering the ambiance of the this historic property, it's location in the middle of the State Park and it's proximity to the falls. Remember, Glen Iris is not the Ritz Carlton. Don't expect all the “my pleasures”, valet parking, room or porter service. Glen Iris is real natural and has historic beauty. Letchworth State Park and the Glen Iris is a MrFiveStar recommended 2 day visit during the fall leaves change.  glenrcw.jpg

Chelsea Flower Show, London
The News - Latest News
Written by MrFiveStar, Ron Crider
chelseaflowerrcw.jpg May 22, 2008 I found myself mesmerized beyond belief at the grandeur of the thousands of plants, flowers, and gardens on display at the annual Chelsea Flower Show in London.

Who would believe MrFiveStar at a flower show? Well, there I was in the thick of it, and what a glorious event it was. This is definitely something you should see in your lifetime, if only once. The Chelsea Flower Show is the most celebrated event of its type in the world. I was in London doing a piece on the Goring Hotel; St. Pancras train station and the EuroStar train. As it happened, just by luck the Goring Hotel was offering a Flower Show special. The Hotel staff insisted it was something I shouldn’t miss. “Sir, you certainly aren’t going to miss the most important event in May are you?” With that they whisked me off in a special car for a short ride to the Royal Hospital grounds near the Thames River, about one mile from the hotel. The weather was perfect about 68 degrees with a light breeze.

L'AVION Newark to PARIS, Business Class
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star
lavion-exterieur03.jpgHow did I over-look this little gem, L’AVION? Check out the price for this summer, starting at just $1,495.00 US, Not one way, that’s roundtrip. In a previous article I mentioned SilverJet was the last to go. Wow! Was I wrong? SilverJet is gone but here is another low fare Business Class Carrier. L’AVION, seems to have a solid plan and is moving ahead slowly. New York, Newark Terminal B, direct to Paris, Orly, "French Style". Click here to visit their web site L’AVION.

I haven’t traveled with them as of this date, however I will within the next 30 days. They look good and I have received several excellent reports.

Here is the skinny so far on this so called Business Class Airline. It seems the check in can be problematic as there are very few attendants. I am also hearing some travelers are expecting a little more service, like a glass of champagne prior to departure and a few more amenities. Remember the seats only pitch to 140 degrees, this is a 757 not a 767 like MaxJet had. Come-on folks, the price is RIGHT! This is an excellent deal for what your are paying. I will be able to give you a first hand report after my flight. The price is really excellent. Read this article by IH Tribune.

Here is another great plus, PC power outlets!

Are you a Paryorker ? To be a Paryorker means to be a Parisian living in New York or a New Yorker residing in Paris -- or simply a person who travels between the two cities for work, family, a passion or just the pleasure of it all!

St. Pancras, EuroStar, London to Paris
The News - Latest News
Written by MrFiveStar, Ron Crider
pancras_new1.jpgThere is only one good way to get between London and Paris. It’s the EuroStar high speed train. Forget Ryan Air, or Easy Jet they will really get you with all the extras for baggage. Don’t even think about taking anything larger than a toothbrush or you will be paying overweigh fees that that resemble a car payment.

May 24, 2008 I traveled to Paris on the EuroStar high speed train from the new St. Pancras station in north London. What an excellent experience. An agent met me as I came through the station door. He showed me to the e-ticket Business Premier electronic check-in machine. I simply inserted the credit card I booked the ticket with and wala! Out came both the London to Paris and the Paris to London tickets. Next, security and immigrations, wala again! I was through in 5 minutes on my way to the Business Premier lounge.

eurostarrc1.jpg
Since 14 November 2007 all Eurostar trains have been routed via High Speed 1 from the newly redeveloped London terminus at St Pancras International. Originally Eurostar intended to retain some services at the former Waterloo International terminal, but this was later ruled out on cost grounds.

From 9 December 2007 Eurostar offers 17 weekday London–Paris services (19 on Fridays) including 7 non-stop, and 10 London–Brussels trains including 3 non-stop.[7] In addition to these three-capitals services, there is one round-trip London–Disneyland Paris and two seasonal services: from July to September there is a weekly London–Ashford–Avignon service, and in the winter months there are twice-weekly Snow Train services to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Aime-la-Plagne and Moutiers in the French Alps for the ski season; one of these runs overnight and the other is a daytime round-trip. The BEST "Travel & Dining Guides" in the World.
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star

Zagat: This is the best guide we have found because it doesn’t have a company attitude. No, Tim and Nina Zagat don’t vote, nor does anyone infree_guide.gif their company. This guide is a real honest democracy (so they say). "We" have the voting power with no veto by them. If you don’t agree you have the opportunity to cast your vote, and should. So, why are we telling you this when we have our own guide. The reason is Zagat covers the entire world, and many places we have yet to visit. We rank restaurants, resorts, hotels and shopping based on our personal experiences, so perhaps we do have an attitude. The opinions contained on this web site and in our publications are our personal opinions along with our friends and associates. We report the “best of the best”. As Fox News says, “we report you decide”. I subscribe to the Zagat guides and use them frequently. The newest feature is Zagat.Mobi . If you are on the go, traveling all the time like me, you can’t live without this, connected to you cell phone or PDA. This is really the BEST. You may also link MrFiveStar to your PAD or cell phone as well. To check out the Zagat guides and Zagat.Mobi click here to go to Zagat.com.
