The Crillon, one of Europe's grand hotels, sits across from the U.S. Embassy. Although some international CEOs and diplomats treat it as a shrine, those seeking less pomposity might prefer the Plaza Athénée or the Ritz. The 200-plus-year-old building, once the palace of the duc de Crillon, is now owned by Jean Taittinger, of the champagne family. The salons boast 17th- and 18th-century tapestries, gilt-and-brocade furniture, chandeliers, fine sculpture, and Louis XVI chests and chairs. The guest rooms are luxurious. Some are spectacular, like the Leonard Bernstein Suite, which has one of the maestro's pianos and one of the grandest views of any hotel room in Paris. The marble bathrooms offer deluxe toiletries, dual sinks, tub/shower combinations, and robes. The furniture, including the beds, offers grand comfort. The boudoir luxury was overseen by Sonia Rykiel, doing her take on Louis XV and Madame Pompadour.

This is the suite I stayed in with by daughters.

The Crillon is housed in an honest-to-goodness eighteenth-century palace. Indeed, the accommodations are truly fit for a king, with terraces overlooking the Place de la Concorde, sumptuous public rooms, and an exquisitely trained staff. The guest rooms are beautifully decorated; the suites offer all the splendor one could hope for. Everywhere the eye rests on silk draperies, woodwork ornamented with gold leaf, Aubusson rugs, and polished marble. Restaurants include the magnificent Les Ambassadeurs and the less formal but still noteworthy L'Obélisque.
