The Riffelalp Resort Is The Highest Alpine Resort In Europe And Has A Unique Situation In The Skiing And Hiking District Of Gornergrat Above Zermatt. The hotel offers a total of 140 beds in 65 double rooms, 5 suites, plus 2 apartments with all modern conveniences. Most Rooms Have A Balcony And Offer Breathtaking Views of The Matterhorn. The Resort has its own heated indoor pool, solarium, massage parlour, sauna (separate facility for ladies), steam baths and fitness room. In-house skiman by Bayard-Sport for ski-rental and ski-service and In-house ski teacher. Other local activities include: tennis, ice skating, curling, mountain biking, winter and summer skiing, helicopter trips, heli-skiing, hiking, mountaineering, glacier tours, paragliding.
The suites and rooms are typical Swiss Alpine with cozy down pillows and comforters. The views from the hotel are breathtaking as you gaze at an un obstructed view of the Matterhorn. There are time as the sun reflects off the Matterhorn and the wind is blowing it appears the mountain it on fire. I have spent some of my most memorable times in my life here in Zermatt.

The dining and service is superb at the Riffelap as in all of Switzerland. Try the Raclette, Raclette is a staple of wintertime in Switzerland. If you ask most people which they prefer, fondue or raclette, most will reply raclette, and that goes for me as well. For those of you who haven't a clue, perhaps I'd better explain what it is. Raclette is essentially melted cheese, served over boiled potatoes with lots of ground black pepper, accompanied by small pickled onions and gherkins. The name comes from the French verb "racler", to scrape, because of the way the melted cheese is scraped off the block.
Like everything with a strong tradition, there are lots of very strict dos and don'ts, which don't actually matter that much. After you've had it a couple of times you'll get to know what you like and what you don't.
Also try their famous Rosti potatoes. They use a cast iron pan for this recipe. They cold boil the potatoes and then they are shredded, mixed with green onions and seasoning, and then baked. I eat this for lunch frequently when hiking. I like an egg on top with a glass of their Fendant white wine. Now that’s a great Swiss lunch.
Fendant (fahn-dahn) A popular white wine and grape in Switzerland. As is the case for so many wines that are light and fresh, it is often best enjoyed locally. Elsewhere in Switzerland the grape is known as Dorin, and in France is is called Chasselas.
