Mr Five Star and World Travel and Dinning Reviews & Resources
Frasca Food and Wine, One of the Best Restaurants in ColoradoFeatured

frasca1_t220.jpgChef Patterson and his business partner sommelier Bobby Stuckey have raised the bar for all Colorado restaurants that aspire to be great. These guys do it great day after day with seldom a slip. I have tested them at least a dozen times since they opened and have always been amazed at the preparation, quality of service and presentation of excellent new, recognizable creations. Frasca, Boulder has become a destination restaurant; people are flying in from all over North American to get a taste of this fine food. You no longer have to travel to Yountville for an over the top dining experience.frasca3.jpg

You can’t just walk in and expect a table, Oh no, not here. You better call well in advance, however you may try arriving just prior to opening and secure a seat at the bar or the olive bar. There are no reservations required and they will serve you everything on the menu. This restaurant is a MrFiveStar exceptional recommendation, you won’t be disappointed I can assure you.

Frasca is the creation of Master Sommelier Bobby Stuckey and Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson. Their shared passion for Friuli-Venezia Giulian cuisine and fine wine is reflected in the exquisitely prepared fare and a comprehensive wine list boasting over 200 varieties. The seasoned and professional staff ensures a memorable evening with their meticulous attention to detail, expert wine pairing, and extensive knowledge of the menu. And the pastoral, elegant dining room evokes the gracious and friendly feeling of traditional Italian Frascas. Warm, welcoming, and unpretentious, Frasca is the perfect destination for impromptu gatherings, casual dinners, and special occasions.

Words cannot adequately express how divine” Colorado’s Most Popular restaurant really is, so you’ll just have to “call two months ahead and pray” that you get a reservation at this “beacon in Boulder”, where chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson and master sommelier Bobby Stuckey (both French Laundry alums) “specialize in the food and wine of [Italy’s] Friuli” region; it’s also No. 1 for Service courtesy of a “friendly, knowledgeable staff” that helps make this “truly world-class experience” “deserving of all the hype.”

frasca5.jpgFantastic in every respect! Hospitality, service, food and wine are all exquisite and in perfect harmony. It was such a pleasure, I dined there tow nights in a row. Frasca is one of the best dinning experience in my memory and stands out over hundreds of "top tier" establishments on either coast. Boulder is a great place anyway, but Frasca is reason in itself to get off a plane in Denver! I will be back!

Frasca is incredible. Food is top notch, as it should be from an ex-Laundry chef. But it's also different. The cuisine of Friuli is something you rarely see in this country. Frasca gives it the focus it deserves. The wine list is one of the best and most informative Italian lists in the country. Bobby Stuckey is the warmest sommelier you will ever meet. Service is flawless, but perfectly unpretentious. It's always packed, so make a reservation.

Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson. Lachlan's burgeoning culinary career began at the Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1999 he moved to Paris to obtain his Certificate d'Aptitude Professionnelle at the prestigious Ecole Gregoire-Ferrandi. After completing his training, he apprenticed with Benoit Guichard at the famed Jamin, a Michelin two-star restaurant renowned for its classic French cuisine. Thereafter, he continued to hone his culinary skills working under owner and chef Guy Guilloux at La Taupiniere, a Michelin rated one-star restaurant in Pont Aven, Brittany.

Lachlan moved back to the United States in 2001 to join the staff of The French Laundry in Yountville, California, as chef de partie under chef Thomas Keller. His international experience and expertise in this role contributed to the restaurant's innovative menus and numerous awards. It is here that he also met his future business partner, sommelier Bobby Stuckey.

Lachlan moved to Colorado in the fall of 2003 to join Bobby and to pursue their vision of opening a neighborhood restaurant reminiscent of the Frascas they had visited in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. Having researched and traveled throughout Italy many times, both were deeply inspired by this region in particular — the international influences of its cuisine, the profusion of local ingredients in its rustic yet elegant dishes, its passionate relationship between food and wine, and the gracious hospitality of the locals. In July of 2005, Lachlan was named one of Food and Wine Magazines Best New Chefs. He is only one of 10 Chefs in the country to receive this distinctive honor. Today Lachlan applies his culinary talents at Frasca to create innovative yet traditional dishes true to the indelible spirit of Friuli, Italy.

l_atelier.jpgNow, if you didn’t plan well and can’t get in just go across the street to L’ Atelier Radek Cerny's food is like a van Gogh painting: distinct, elaborately concocted and instantly recognizable, says Kyle Wagner of the Denver Post. Cerny's food is being shown once again  this time in Boulder at L'Atelier, the name a French word for "artists' studio" and an obvious reference to the owner's intent to paint yet more plates with his broad strokes and stir yet more diners' senses with his colorful sauces and rich cooking techniques. For Cerny, the plate has always been a canvas upon which to wow. From his days decades ago as the creator of Al Fresco and the European Cafe in Boulder and Denver, his seven years at the much-missed Papillon Cafe in Cherry Creek North, and the recent debacles of Radex at Ninth and Lincoln and Le Chantecler in Niwot, Cerny has established himself as a culinary artist. He is a master who took his years of European training and made something of them, making a name for himself, as well.
