Piero's Italian Restaurant

pieros tableI walked by this place many times on my way to the Convention Center. I parked my car in their parking lot several times, but never walked inside. May 15 2006 I walked in at 6:30 without a reservation. There was the man who started the restaurant in 1982 Freddie Glusman, who welcomed me like an old friend. What a great way to start an evening at a new restaurant. Already the experience is good and I haven’t eaten the first morsel.

This is a white tablecloth, dim light, I contemporary well done Italian eatery. It feels more like New York than Las Vegas. Many of the staff have been with Freddie for a decade some several decades. The service is incredibly together. The Captain and his service waiters are a team and really get the job done without being overbearing. Service is swift but not rushed. The keep an eye on you at all times and pace the service with your dining and not the kitchen schedule. The wine list is extensive with some off the scale prices, however the house Chianti Classico Riserva for $10.00 was a great buy. The Caesar Salad is well prepared with bite size romaine lettuce, just the right blend of anchovies, garlic, olive oil and capers. The Caesar Salad was above average. The signature entrée, Osso Buco is as good as you can get anywhere west of Italy, slow cooked for 6 hours in tomato sauce, onions, carrots and numerous herbs. They also poach the Linguini in the Osso Buco sauce to give it that added vest. Just as you would expect the Osso Buco, is fork tender with luscious flavors. Bring your apatite, this is a large serving. dsc00201b

To the left in the center is Joe and my wait staff. Ask to be seated at one of Joe's tables, he will treat you well.

Here is a tip about eating at Italian restaurants no matter how classy they are. I ask for a bib. I know it sounds peasantly, but somehow without the bib I seem to end up wearing some of the dinner. It has something to do with all those sauces and the twirling of the pasta (not in the spoon). Red sauce from the Osso Buco does not go well on a white silk shirt. It tends to look like you have just been shot. Be humble and ask for the bib.

This restaurant was home to the Rat Pack, former Presidents and of course the Hollywood crowd, but who cares about them. Just because they are high profile doesn’t mean they know anything about good food. I hate when restaurants try to sell them selves on the basis of who has eaten there. This restaurant does not do that. You be the judge for yourself. I ate there and gave Piero’s FIVE STARS. I will be back again and again when I visit Las Vegas.
