L Hostaria-Italian Restaurant

Considered by many as the most authentic Italian restaurants in the Aspen area.

Traditional excellence characterizes the Italian cuisine served at L’Hosteria. Traditional in the sense that fresh, high quality ingredients and homemade pastas are prepared to provide authentic regional Italian flavors throughout a menu of dishes that will not disappoint anyone who enjoys quality food that is not forced to fit a passing new fad. Our meal started with mussels marinara for me and a spinach salad that was presented with warm asparagus rolled in prosciutto, fresh figs and a sherry balsamic vinegar for my dining partner. To accompany these appetizers, we selected, with the able assistance of the wait staff, a Pra “monte grandee” reserve Soave wine by the glass from the proprietor’s very impressive wine list, which provides the most extensive selection of quality Italian wines found in any restaurant I have sampled to date in Aspen.

In lieu of a salad I tasted the burrata fresh mozzarella cheese which, we were told, is made in the Puglia region of Italy and air shipped fresh to the restaurant. This was served simply with sautéed cherry tomatoes, fresh rosemary and a delicious olive oil imported from the Tuscany region that is a must try dish for any fresh cheese lover. For main courses my guest selected a traditional breaded veal chop Milanese served with fresh arugula and tomatoes and I picked a less common but profoundly satisfying “Coniglio” which is rabbit braised in white wine, black olives and shallots served in a terracotta dish to which coarsely pureed sweet root vegetables were added before serving.

The restaurant’s owner, Tiziano Gortan, deftly guided me through the myriad red wine selections on his restaurant’s list and recommended a single vineyard Pinot Noir wine from the Alto Adige region of Italy produced by Hofstatter and labeled as their “St. Urbano” Pinot Nero. My fear that we would be saddled with a disappointing surrogate for a great Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Oregon or California was quickly dispelled and this wine was a wonderful complement to the rabbit dish from the same region with a depth of flavor and length of finish that made the veal dish memorable as well. The flattering comments from a number of diners around us further validated our opinions and if you are looking for great Italian food at a fair price, with the added benefit of an intimate European style bar area for a before or after dinner drink, don’t miss this place.
