Trapped on the Tarmac PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mr Five Star

How is it possible to keep passengers trapped in an aircraft on the tarmac at an airport for numerous hours? Most recently there was the Virgin Atlantic flight from London to Newark, diverted to Hartford's Bradley International Airport due to bad weather at Newark. The passengers were trapped for nearly 4 hours on board the aircraft because no one could figure out how to clear these passengers through Customs since the flight was not expected at Bradley. virginatlantic.jpg

Where was the Contingency Plan? What? NO Contingency Plan? Who's in charge here? Don't Airports and Airlines have emergency personnel standing by (perhaps not on duty) that can be called in for events like this? WHY NOT? Suppose passengers became ill as a result of bad food. Would they have to wait 4 hours after landing to find the Customs Agent? No, I am not suggesting additional payrolls for the airports and airlines. Just designate existing personnel to be on call like doctors at hospitals for events like this.

Look folks! This is a no brainer. Unload the passengers, heard them into a secure room where there are rest rooms and water can be brought in until the proper Customs Officers can show up. If this is a Customs issue, let's get it fixed. This is not the first time and it won't be the last time a situation like this will take place.

Then there was the Jet Blue passengers trapped for 8 hours at JFK hopeing the weather would lift prior to take off. Get this; they were stranded there so long the wheels froze to the ground and the aircraft couldn't move. The excuse reported by the airline was there were no gates available to bring the aircraft back to the airport. NO Gates at JFK? Hey, this isn't some remote small airport. jetblue.jpgCouldn't the airport have delayed at least one other aircraft from their gate just long enough to unload those frazzled passengers. I bet they would have gotten off the aircraft in record time. OK, so they waited so long the aircraft couldn't move. Bring on the buses. Tell me they couldn't find any buses in the New York City area? I know they have plenty of movable stairs sitting around. What's the problem here? Once again it's fairly simple. NO, Contingency Plan and NO stand by emergency people on call.

The problem here is that we have way too many rules and laws that can't be broken or bent to solve a problem when in fact many of them are broken every day. Come on airline executives, US Customs and airport management let's start getting real and stop this nonsense with all these trapped passengers.  Click here to see what the Government is doing about this.
