Skiing, Where to go? Switzerland, France or Vail, Colorado?
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star

I have been skiing for 35 yeas all over the world. My favorite ski destination is the car free village of Zermatt, Switzerland at the foot of the Matterhorn. When I go there this year I will stay at the 207_30193ro79970.jpgHotel Mount Cervin Palace in the heart of the village. If you are looking for a romantic ski hideaway I would suggest the Romankik Hotel Julenjulen.jpgFor that "out of the way ski experience" I would stay at the Riffelalp, high up on the Gornergrat mountain. Zermatt is one of the few places in the world where you can easily ski to a different country and return the same day. With the current exchange rate, Switzerland is an attractive ski option. riffelalp.jpg

My second most favorite intimate ski area is Megeve, France.  I will stay at the Chalet du d'Arbois. Megeve emerged as a serious haute winter playground in the 1920s, thanks largely to the Baroness Naomie de Rothschild, who built her famed Palace Hôtel du Mont d'Arbois here. Since that time, everyone from Hubert de Givenchy and Rita Hayworth to Ringo Starr and Saudi royalty has descended upon this tiny French hamlet, parking their private jets in the nearby Geneva airport. Megève is a town and commune in the Haute-Savoie department and Rhône-Alpes region of France. Megève is a famous ski resort near the Mont-Blanc in the French Alps. It is sometimes considered one of the most beautiful resorts in the world.

The Megève ski area boasts 300 kilometers of marked trails, served by 81 integrated lifts, (and no t-bars) offering extensive terrain for skiers of all levels. Since opening in 1913, the resort has played its part in the development of the sport of skiing and regularly hosts World Cup races. Two snow parks and a half-pipe are available for snowboarding. The resort is served by a modern, high-speed lift system that ensures a quick ride to the top. With an average of 200cm of snow falling every year, the trails are well covered. On the occasion when Mother Nature doesn’t provide enough snow, there are more than 175 snow cannons to make extra.

In the USA, I love the Vail area also a pedestrian-no car village. My first choice, is the Sonnenalp Resort in the heart of the Vail Village.043702_ext_02_j.jpg The Sonnenalp is not a ski-in, ski-out, all be it only a short walk to the lifts. I will always choose the Sonnenalp because of the management and the warm family atmosphere. This Resort is owned and operated by the Faessler family. Johannes Faessler and his wife Rosanna are the owner, operators. They are very hands on. Their attention to detail in every area of the resort is unsurpassed. The accommodations are  authentic Bavarian including fireplaces in each suite and heated floors in the bathrooms. All the suites are totally current with high speed connectivity and flat panel TV's. Let's not forget the food. Ludwig's, located in the hotel, is one of the finest restaurants in all of the Vail Valley. Then there is the only truly Swiss Restaurant, The Swiss Chalet also located in the resort. For a casual snack there is the Bully Ranch and for Apre Ski there is the King's club where you may sip Champagne, sample caviar or have a beer and burger. For me, MrFiveStar, the Sonnenalp has it all.

The Sonnenalp Resort also offeres a new lodging option in the heart of Vail Village. One Willow Bridge Residences is located at the corner of Vail’s Meadow Drive and One Willow Bridge Road, just steps from the Sonnenalp Resort and Vail Mountain. luxury residences Brand new 2 and 3 bedroom condominiums feature elegant furnishings, gourmet kitchens and designer baths. Centrally located, guests have access to numerous dining options within the building as well as the renowned shopping and dining of Vail Village. willowbridge.jpgGuests who make their lodging reservations through the Sonnenalp Resort of Vail enjoy full access to the Sonnenalp Spa, preferred tee times at the Sonnenalp Golf Club, charge privileges and the world-class personal service of this esteemed resort. Call (866) 284-4411 or (970) 476-5656 to reserve.

Did I forget skiing? There is no better mountain to ski  in the US than Vail Mountain with over five thousand skiiable acres and 33 lifts. Shopping? Just show up with your street cloths and underwear. Vail will outfit you in style from head to toe. There is no need to bring a suitcase. The Sonnenalp will send your purchases home upon your departure. See you at the Sonnenalp Resort, Vail. Click here to go directly to the Sonnenalp web site.

Beaujolais Nouveau: History Behind the Third Thursday in November
The News - Latest News
Written by Brad Prescott
Please understand by posting this article I am in no way implying Beaujolais Nouveau is a Five Star Wine. However, the annual launching of this marginal wine at best, must be considered an epic marketing coup for it's producers. Seldom does any product receive so much international attention year after year, with the furry of distribution and have so little to offer ultimately to the consumer.

On the positive side, I suppose it is the event we are celebrating, not the product. I can't remember a year when we didn't purchase a case within a few days of its arrival here in the US. Then this entire case is always consumed by Christmas. No one ever comments on the quality of the wine, they just drink it like egg-nog as if it is a holiday requirement. So, it is for this reason I even mention the wine in the first place, but then consider the Holidays without Beaujolais Nouveau, why, it would be like not having uncle Harry snoring on the couch all day Christmas. MrFiveStar

At one past midnight on the third Thursday of each November, from little villages and towns like Romanèche-Thorins, over a million cases of Beaujolais Nouveau begin their journey through a sleeping France to Paris for immediate shipment to all parts of the world. Banners proclaim the good news: Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! "The New Beaujolais has arrived!" One of the most frivolous and animated rituals in the wine world has begun.

bnlabel2006.jpgBy the time it is over, over 65 million bottles, nearly half of the region's total annual production, will be distributed and drunk around the world. It has become a worldwide race to be the first to serve to this new wine of the harvest. In doing so, it has been carried by motorcycle, balloon, truck, helicopter, Concorde jet, elephant, runners and rickshaws to get it to its final destination. It is amazing to realize that just weeks before this wine was a cluster of grapes in a growers vineyard. But by an expeditious harvest, a rapid fermentation, and a speedy bottling, all is ready at the midnight hour. By French law, Beaujolais Nouveau is to be released no earlier than the third Thursday of November.

Beaujolais Nouveau began as a local phenomenon in the local bars, cafes, and bistros of Beaujolais and Lyons. Each fall the new Beaujolais would arrive with much fanfare. In pitchers filled from the growers barrels, wine was drunk by an eager population. It was wine made fast to drink while the better Beaujolais was taking a more leisurely course. Eventually, the government stepped into regulate the sale of all this quickly transported, free-flowing wine.

In 1938 regulations and restrictions were put in place to restrict the where, when, and how of all this carrying on. After the war years, in 1951, these regulations were revoked by the region's governing body, the Union Interprofessional des Vins de Beaujolais (UIVB), and the Beaujolais Nouveau was officially recognized. The official release date was set for November 15th. Beaujolais Nouveau was officially born. By this time, what was just a local tradition had gained so much popularity that the news of it reached Paris. The race was born. It wasn't long thereafter that the word spilled out of France and around the world. In 1985, the date was again changed, this time to the third Thursday of November tying it to a weekend and making the celebration complete. But wherever the new Beaujolais went, importers had to agree not to sell it before midnight on the third Thursday of November.

On a more technical note, the wine is strictly speaking, more properly termed Beaujolais Primeur. By French and European rules, a wine released during the period between its harvest and a date in the following spring, is termed primeur. A wine released during the period between its own and the following years harvest, is termed nouveau. Well, enough of that!

It is a triumph of marketing and promotion, mostly due to the efforts of Georges Dubeuf. The largest negociant in the region, he is a tireless promoter of Beaujolais and Beaujolais Nouveau. More than a fifth of his annual production, about 4 million bottles, is Beaujolais Nouveau. All in all, in the last 45 years, sales have risen from around a million bottles to more than 70 million bottles.

The Fat Duck, # 2 Best Restaurant in the World.
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star
Now tell me, does this look like the “# 2 Best Restaurant in the World”? Well, it sure is, and further more it isn't in France, Las Vegas or Spain. The Fat Duck is in England and not even in London. The Fat Duck is located about one hour from London not far from Heathrow International Airport in Bray.

The Fat Duck is a restaurant run by chef Heston Blumenthal in Bray, Berkshire, England. The Fat Duck has received the highest honour a restaurant can get—three stars in the famous Michelin Guide—and is one of only three restaurants in the UK and Ireland 2004 guide with three Michelin stars ("exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey").450px-fat_duck.jpg In 2005, it was named as the best restaurant in the world by Restaurant magazine, and it came second in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Unlike most of the top ranked restaurants, which are located in exclusive districts of major cities, The Fat Duck is to be found in a modest cottage-style house in a country village. Bray is also home to Michel Roux's Waterside Inn, which was ranked as the sixth best restaurant in the UK and the nineteenth best in the world.

Blumenthal adheres to the principles of molecular gastronomy, according to which the quality of the diner's experience can be enhanced considerably when the physical and chemical processes that take place in cooking are understood. This approach to studying and designing food at The Fat Duck results in the discovery of unconventional and often bizarre-sounding dishes. For example, the restaurant's tasting menu, a tour of Blumenthal's signature creations, features "snail porridge", "sardine on toast sorbet", and "salmon poached with liquorice". These unusual juxtapositions are attributed to logical reasoning about physical and chemical properties of foods. While liquorice and asparagus is not traditionally an appealing combination, their flavours are chemically similar, and so the two ingredients should, theoretically, complement upon the palate. El Bulli, Best Restaurant in the World, Spain
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star
elbulliarch.jpgIt's not hard to see why El Bulli, which also topped the poll in 2002, remains our judges' favourite. The dazzling dishes that Adrià continues to conjure are by now the stuff of legend. El Bulli has built its reputation on its astonishing inventions, on pioneering techniques that yield results on the table that surprise, provoke, engage your sense of humour and taste divine. It's a cuisine that differs from others, according to Adrià, in that "it demands psychological reflection". In other words, you don't come to El Bulli for a feed, you come for an experience.

With an approach to food as avant-garde as Adrià's, it's understandable that so much that is written about El Bulli centres on the kitchen. But food, as in any other restaurant, is just one part of the equation. The contribution the front-of-house team makes to the success of El Bulli is immense. You won't find better service than this anywhere in the world. The staff are absolutely top-notch, professional, knowledgeable, charming and, in an environment in which you're being presented with food the likes of which you'll never have seen before, they put you instantly at ease.

And then there's the location. A small bay on the Costa Brava, with wooded hills all around. Scenery that thrills the senses almost as much as the food does

With such ingredients, it's small wonder that El Bulli remains number one. The question is: can anyone topple it? Behind the stove: Chef-patron Ferran Adrià What they say: "El Bulli is the very home - the gleaming apex - of culinary innovation. The unexpected is to be expected, and only a fool (or an unsophisticate) would arrive here anticipating anything less. Yes, this is incredibly cool. Magical, even." Rachel Cook, The Guardian. New dish this year: Tomato cookies. Click here to go to the El Bulli web site! Please don't try to go there tonight, not even this month maybe not this year. Try next year. I am not kidding!

On Champagne
The News - Latest News
Written by Madame Lilly Bollinger
I drink champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it unless I'm thirsty. " ~ Madame Lilly Bollinger

Champagne is a toast to optimism, an attempt to bolster defiance, or a companion for consolation. According to Napoleon, "In victory you deserve it, in defeat you need it."

1533.jpgWhether you are celebrating victory or defeat or just the passing of another day, for a wine to be called Champagne, it must come from that particular region of France that is located 90 miles east of Paris in the rolling hills near the towns of Epernay, Reims, and Sézanne. Anyone in the world can make a sparkling wine in the méthode champenoise, but only the Champenoise can make Champagne.

That essential méthode results in 49 million bubbles in every bottle, scientists suggest. Next time you open a bottle, try to keep all 49 million bubbles in the bottle. Releasing them needlessly into the air is wasteful, for there is enjoyment in every single gaseous orb.

When opening a bottle of Champagne, the sheer pressure inside the bottle can cause the cork to become a projectile. Don’t take the wire cage off of the cork. Hold the cage and cork tightly as you slowly turn the bottle with your other hand. Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle while you slowly let the cork out of the bottle and release the pressure with a small hiss. The 45-degree angle allows the gas to escape without any liquid cascading out. Sometimes the pressure is great enough that you will get it bubbling out of the top of the bottle; have a glass handy just in case.

Besides the range of sweetness levels, there are different colors, and each producer creates a unique flavor profile. Most all Champagnes are made to be "Brut" level of sweetness. The names you would see on a label (in ascending order from driest to sweetest) are: Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Sec, Demi-Sec. Normally "sec" equates to "dry", but not in the case of Champagne, it really means slightly-sweet. Extra Brut is actually the driest of them all. Demi-Sec is sweet enough to serve with dessert.

I have the simplest taste. I am always satisfied with the best.’ Oscar Wilde.  'There is no sincerer love than the love of food.’ George Bernard Shaw.

Europe is looking better all of a sudden!
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star
20f0decdc6.jpgWe Americans can almost afford to start looking at Europe as a possible option for almost affordable travel. This past May when I went to London my hotel suite cost 500 pounds or about $1,000 US, today it will cost me $865.00 still not a great bargain in the UK, but that same room in France will cost me $670.00 and in Switzerland $440.00. Are you thinking what I am thinking? Maybe we should be looking at Zermatt for our ski holiday this year. The airlines are feeling the squeeze as well and are beginning to offer excellent fares to Europe. Think about getting a deal to London, like Stansted then take Ryan Air anywhere in Europe for very little more. It is my opinion you should watch very carefully the exchange rate in Europe and the air fare deals. This US financial debacle may get you to Europe when you were least expecting to go. You see, sometimes there is a silver lining in that cloud.

Zermatt - The village without cars Zermatt, at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn, is a world without cars. Electric-cars and horse-drawn sleighs and carriages are the only transport allowed. Come to car-free Zermatt - the perfect Alpine resort for rest and relaxation. Zermatt is located at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Valais Alps in the south of Switzerland at an altitude of 1,600m. above sea-level. The resort lies at the end of the Vispa Valley, which is reached via the town of Visp. 38 of Europe's 76 four-thousand-metre peaks are in the area surrounding Zermatt. Zermatt's ski area is connected to the ski area of Cervinia (Italy) via the Theodul pass (3,300m.) and the Testa Grigia (3'480m.)

Check out the Ski Runs, click here. Now this is hard to turn down! The Matterhorn ski paradise covers an area from the Rothorn paradise (3103 m) and the Gornergrat (3089 m) to Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn) (3883 m) and Schwarzsee paradise (2583 m). It connects from Matterhorn glacier paradise to Breuil-Cervinia / Valtournenche and Val d'Aoste. There are three ways for skiers and snowboarders to reach Zermatt's winter sports area. Access to the Rothorn paradise winter sports area and the free-ride Stockhorn area is via the Rothorn paradise resort station.

The Gornergrat winter sports area is reached via the resort station of the Gornergrat Bahn transport system. The Matterhorn Express takes winter sports enthusiasts from the Matterhorn glacier paradise resort station to Schwarzsee paradise or Matterhorn glacier paradise, connecting with Breuil-Cervinia / Valtournenche (Italy). The electrically-powered buses serve all 3 resort stations. The bus service is included in the ski-pass . Pistes (Matterhorn ski paradise) Zermatt, Cervinia and Valtournenche: 313 km of marked pistes Zermatt: 183 km of marked pistes: 29 km easy / blue pistes 107 km intermediate / red pistes 9 km steep / black pistes 38 km unprepared (freeride) / yellow pistes Lifts (Zermatt) 1 underground funicular (Zermatt - Sunnegga paradise) 7 cable-cars 6 gondola-lifts 9 chair-lifts 10 drag-lifts 1 cog-railway (Zermatt-Gornergrat)

By Train: It takes approximately 3 hours to reach Zermatt from Geneva Airport and Milan-Malpensa Airport. As of December 1, 2007 the train from Zurich Airport will take only 3 hours and 16 minutes. Almost an hour faster than previously. The trip from Bern takes 2 hours and 8 minutes and from Basel 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Niagara Falls, Ontario a Great Family Trip
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star
Niagara Falls July 29, 2008: Better get there before it’s too late! The falls are getting older every day! They are receding. Niagara Falls has receded almost 1/2 mile up the Niagara River since 1600. Until recently the falls were creeping up the river at the rate of 3 feet a year, and then in the 80’s the US Army Corp of Engineers came up with a way to slow the erosion down to 1 foot every 10 years. niagskylon.jpgI suppose that’s good, although it seems that every time we tamper with nature we create new problems. The Canadian Falls is still looking good but unfortunately the US falls is accumulating a large pile of rocks just beneath the spillway therefore reducing the fall height by some 40 feet in the past 40 years.

Regardless of the Falls somewhat eroded appearance I personally think they are still a great world treasure and to me they have never looked better. Both the Canadian and American falls stopped flowing for several hours in March1948 due to an ice jam up the river. Then in 1969 the US Corp of Engineers diverted the flow completely from the American falls to the Canadian falls for several months to determine if the rocks beneath the American Falls could be removed. The answer was “yes”, but too expensive, so everything was put back to normal and the rock pile continues to grow. Click here to learn more about the History of the Falls.

When was the last time you visited Niagara Falls? Don’t tell me you have never been there! Shame on you! I bet you have been to Paris and visited the Eifel Tower, Disney Resorts several times, as well as Rome and visited the Coliseum. You know, all those attractions are new and man made compared to Niagara Falls that has been here for over 12,000 years.

If you are my age you will recall that Niagara Falls, New York at one time was the honeymoon capital of the US. Not any more unless you think staying in the Day’s Inn is something special, well, then again maybe the Day’s Inn is OK for the first night, who is going to take time out of their first honeymoon night to see anything except each other!

Oh, how we have evolved! Now we need, hot bars, cold drinks, rock stars, and lavish suites. Not in Niagara Falls New York, not for the past 30 years, but just cross the border into Canada 10 minutes away you can have it all. Those sleepy Canadians woke up one day and realized you could see both the Canadian and American Falls only from Canada. Up went the hotels, then the 550 foot observation and dining tower, then came the casinos’, Marine Land, TGI Fridays, Marriott, Hilton, Embassy Suites, Wolfgang Puck and so many more I can’t count them. They built beautiful gardens and walkways connecting the various venues together. The Canadians did a B+ job of creating an attraction out of a Natural Wonder. Disney could have done it better, but then Disney can’t build every attraction everywhere in the world.  Disney only recreates things and builds fantasy; Niagara Falls is natural and it is still here today.

Costa d'Este, Gloria Estefan's New Beach Resort, Vero Beach, Florida
The News - Latest News
Written by Mr Five Star

Vero Beach, Florida July 2008: After much talk, lots of intrigue, the ultra conservative town of Vero Beach, Florida finally had its first look inside Gloria Estefan’s new 50 Million dollar beach resort Costa d' Este in June 2008.estefront.jpg For us residents of Vero anything would have been better then all those many years of staring at the eyesore beach front properties formally occupied by the Day’s Inn and Howard Johnson, then the Palm Court. What a disaster! Then came the hurricanes in 2004, Jean and Francis, that delivered the much needed fatel punch. Finally they were at least closed down. Prior to the hurricanes Gloria and Emillo her husband were just planning to do gradual renovations. For us Veroites we were all hoping every day we would hear the sweet sound of bulldozers totally clearing that beach ghetto. Fortunately for us Gloria and Emillo quickly came up with a new plan.

Miracles still do happen! Gloria Estefan and Emillo had a new bigger vision and that vision was to take place on our beach. Yep, right here where for two decades we had to apologize to our visitors as to why we didn’t have any quality accommodations. That vision was too good to be true. Wow! It sounded great, the renderings look great but was it really going to happen? Would our tunnel vision local government find some way to continue to retard our tourist development once again? Least we forget the wonderful beach front Marriott project that was stymied by our city fathers many years ago. In order for this project to move ahead quickly it was necessary for them to work around the footprint and part of the structure of the previous buildings.

For well over 3 years we were hearing of an opening scheduled for January 2008. Like Robert Benchley, we were “watching” the bustle of activity on the site. Then, January February and March passed us by and still no opening?estbar.jpg Finally word leaked out that June would be the magic month. Yes, June 2008. As usual, like my wife says, “when my ship comes in I will probably at the airport” and so it was, I was in Dallas, Texas when the long awaited event took place. I suppose it was no big deal since my name wasn’t on the invite list anyway. However my wife and her fem-fatal posse somehow penetrated security and managed to see a sneak preview and grab a quick drink during the pre opening week. My wife would never have done this by herself, that’s just not Dr. Molly, but for her former flight attendant friends, this “uninvited party penetration” was an almost weekly occurrence in their past.

Molly and her friends couldn’t wait to text message me to say “they were in and it’s great”. Typical, what’s great? The food? The drinks? estelobby.jpgThe decor? I tried to call her but to no avail since the noise level overpowered her cell phone’s vanity ringer, Beethoven 9th. If her phone rang like a normal phone she may have heard it. Later that evening I received a voice message on my cell phone from Molly. “You will love it, It is very South Beach, Latin, great woods, stone and mirrors, very much alive, just what “Zero Vero” needs”. Zero Vero is what the local trust fund kids lovingly refer to Vero Beach as.

Nestled on Florida’s east coast in the ocean-side community of Vero Beach lies an exquisite world-class retreat surrounded by white sand beaches and lush natural views. Specifically designed to pamper, relax and inspire, this Personal Luxury Resort that seamlessly blends Four-Star accommodations with an array of the finest amenities, eagerly awaits your arrival.  I report you be the judge, as they say!

Nearby airports: Melbourne International Airport (MLB – 39 miles) Palm Beach International Airport (PBI – 80 miles) Orlando International Airport (MCO – 110 miles) Vero Beach Municipal Airport.
